Obamacare Is Adolf Hitler’s ‘T-4 Program’ Revived.

This article was written while Obamacare was still a proposal, and not yet passed into law. Hitler was very smart, he knew that before he could get Germans to accept the concentration camps, he had to first get them to think of themselves as gods deciding who would live and who would die through the control of a national healthcare system. The creation of the T-4 Program, or the German Universal Healthcare System – did just that.

Obamacare is the revived version of the T-4 Program. Hitler would be very proud.

From EIR: In July of 1939, a conference of medical professionals was held in Berlin, Germany. Participating were the professors and chairmen of the departments of psychiatry of the leading universities and medical schools of Germany, many of them, the most respected professionals in their fields. The subject? What would be the criteria for determining what patients would be considered to have “lives unworthy to be lived,” and what was the most “practical and cheap” manner of removing them from being burdens on the health-care system—by death.

Thus, the bureaucratic machine began to be cranked up for what is known as Adolf Hitler’s program of genocide through “euthanasia,” a program which killed hundreds of thousands of non-Jewish Germans, and eventually, millions of Jews and non-Germans as well.

That program, which had already begun years before, against concentration camp inmates and handicapped children, was officially put into effect in October 1939, when Hitler penned his own personal, and secret, authorization for the program, under the title, “The Destruction of Lives Unworthy of Life”:

Reichsleiter Bouhler and Dr. Brandt are charged with the responsibility for expanding the authority of physicians, to be designated by name, to the end that patients considered incurable according to the best available human judgment of their state of health, can be accorded a mercy death.

To carry out this program, Hitler and his fiendish Nazi associates would fully utilize the “professional” apparatus which had been put in place, as well as the popular, British-eugenics-spawned ideology which had been increasingly dominant in Germany since Hitler seized power with the aid of powerful British-Wall Street financiers. The killing would proceed with the utmost “cost-effectiveness” and professionalism, in order to save funds for the Nazi state’s preferred projects, and not waste them on “ineffective” medical treatments.

If that sounds familiar, it should. For the proposals which the Obama Administration has currently put on the table, follow them in virtual lockstep. First, the “experts” decide what is “effective” care, with “cost-effectiveness” foremost in mind, ruling out “inappropriate” treatments. These standards become the law, in terms of what medical care will be paid for. Then other experts efficiently implement those decisions, through the existing hospital apparatus.

The result, as in Nazi Germany, is that millions are, with the stroke of a pen, consigned to death.

The T4 Program

The T4 program, which was established following Hitler’s secret order, took its name from its Berlin office address, Tiergarten 4, which address housed the coordinating organization for the program, the Reich Work Group of Sanatoriums and Nursing Homes. In charge were Philip Bouhler, chief of the Chancellory, and Dr. Karl Brandt, Hitler’s personal physician and chief medical officer of the land.

Their first task was to devise the questionnaires which would be used to categorize the targetted institutionalized populations. Four categories were specified:

  1. Patients suffering from specified diseases who are not employable, or are employable only in simple mechanical work. These included schizophrenia, epilepsy, senile diseases, therapy-resistant paralysis, feeble-mindedness, and the like.
  2. Patients who have been continually institutionalized for at least five years.
  3. Patients who are criminally insane.
  4. Non-German patients.

While including these categorizations, the questionnaire overall gave the impression of a rather neutral statistical survey, which also delved into the patients’ biographies, their financial situations, and the like (Figure 1). It was accompanied by a questionnaire for the institution in which the patient was housed, which asked about staffing, beds available, and budgetary questions. A significant stress was also put on detailing the patients’ abilities to work.

The first questionnaires went out in October 1939, the month Hitler signed his order, to state hospitals and other public and private institutions where mental patients, epileptics, the mentally retarded, and other handicapped persons resided. The responsibility for filling them out, often in a very short period of time, fell on the physicians at those institutions.

The questionnaires were then sent to panels of three or four psychiatric experts, who indicated their opinion about whether the patient (whom they had never seen, much less examined, and whose medical history they were unfamiliar with) was to live or die. Each “expert” made his or her decision independently, and passed on the questionnaire to the next. The choice for the experts was effectively only one of two options: a plus sign in red, which meant death; or a dash in blue, which meant life. Occasionally, a psychiatrist would put a question mark in the space provided.

The questionnaires were then sent to a chief expert, who passed the final judgment. At this “higher” level, there was no alternative other than life or death. In fact, the “senior expert” was not bound by the recommended decisions. From his judgment, there was no appeal. From that point on, it was merely a matter of sending back the decision to the relevant institution, where the final dispensation of the patient was carried out, and, if so ordered, sending him or her to one of the designated “killing centers.”

These centers were supervised by medical personnel, who oversaw the killing, and were responsible for devising the fraudulent death certificates which were sent to the families of those who had been determined to have lives “not worthy to be lived.”

Councils of Experts

Shift now to today, where we are in the first phases of the Nazi euthanasia program (called “reform”) being promoted by the Obama Administration and its behavioral psychologist “experts.”It starts with the dictum that there are insufficient resources to provide medical care for all, especially those at the “end of life,” or not able to be “effectively” rehabilitated. In other words, the Nazi assumption that there are lives “not worthy to be lived.” At least according to the priorities for spending which the Administration has set—i.e., the banks must be saved first.

The second step is for the Administration to set up those “panels of experts” who will determine the criteria for who will get medical care, and who won’t. Already, the so-called Obama stimulus package has created one such panel, the Federal Coordinating Council for Comparative Effectiveness Research. This 15-member council is comprised of highly credentialed “experts,” many of them medical doctors, who are tasked with “coordinating research” on the relative values of treatments. While explicitly claiming that the Council will not directly pronounce judgments on treatments and payments, it is clear that the research that they are supervising is intended to do precisely that.

Particularly ominous is the fact that one of the Council’s members, Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, is trained in “bioethics,” a discipline dedicated precisely to determining criteria for deciding who should live, and who should die. Crucially significant as well, is that Obama’s head of the Office of Management and Budget, Peter Orszag, has already set out his genocidal judgment that around 30% of current health-care services and procedures are unnecessary.

The model for their work, as reflected in statements by many of the relevant officials, is the British National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), the Orwellian-named agency which has central control over what medical care will be provided to British subjects within the British National Health Service. As the following article explains, NICE’s directives have systematically denied Britons quality care, on the basis of its being “too expensive,” and have singled out, especially, the elderly, for being undeserving of intensive medical care.

The Comparative Effectiveness Council is clearly only the beginning of the genocide—if this Nazi plan is not stopped cold. source – EIR

Israel’s Danon: Country Will Do ‘Whatever it Takes’ to Protect Itself.

Israel’s Deputy Minister of Defense Danny Danon tells Newsmax his country is prepared to do “whatever is necessary” to protect itself from Syria and its Russian-supplied weapons.

He also insists that Israel “cannot allow” Iran to have nuclear weapons and will take action on its own if necessary.

Story continues below.

And he says the so-called Arab Spring should be termed the “Arab Winter” due to the increased power of radical Muslims in the region.

Danon is a member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu‘s Likud Party and author of the book “The Will to Prevail.”

Russia has confirmed that it is fulfilling an order for long-range surface-to-air missiles for Syria to serve as a deterrent against foreign military intervention.

In an exclusive interview with Newsmax TV on Friday, Danon comments: “We are following very carefully what’s happening today in Syria and we are disturbed. I do not understand why Russia or any other nation would like to supply more weapons at this stage. It’s a pity, but we are following it very carefully and we are ready for every scenario.”

Asked if Israel plans to strike at shipments of advanced Russian weapons in Syria, Danon responds: “We have no intention of starting any conflict in the region, but we will do whatever is necessary to protect Israel, and we have proven in the past that we have the capability to defend our people. If we have to do it we will do it.”

Danon is concerned that the fight in Syria could blow up into a full-scale regional war.

“Nobody actually knows what will be the outcome in Syria – who will take over, what will be the end of the Assad regime, so we are following it very carefully,” he says. “And yes, we feel that the conflict in Syria is moving into Lebanon today and who knows, it can go into other directions as well. That’s why all the nations in the area, not only Israel but also Jordan and Turkey, are following very carefully the situation today in Syria.”

The Assad regime in Syria is receiving assistance from Iran, whose nuclear program continues running apace.

“You look at what’s happening today in the Middle East and you see the hand of Iran all over,” Danon says.

“We see it in Lebanon, with the people who are fighting today in Syria, with the people who are fighting in the Sinai Peninsula. We know that Iran is sending weapons to those people and we are worried about that.

“Somebody will have to take action regarding Iran. Israel cannot allow Iran to become nuclear, and I have to mention it’s only a matter of time. You can argue whether it’s six months or 12 months but we are getting closer to the point where somebody will have to do something.”

Asked if Israel might take action on its own against Iran, Danon tells Newsmax: “When we get to the point of a red line, we will have to do whatever necessary to protect our people.

“Iran has a leader full of hatred and he is threatening to annihilate all the Jewish people. We cannot just sit idly by and say, let’s wait to see if he’s serious or not. That is why when we hear the voices coming from Iran, we cannot ignore them. If the point will come and we feel that the U.S., Europe and all the other nations are ignoring Iran, Israel has the capability to protect itself.”

Danon defines that “red line” as when “the Iranians will have the capability of using nuclear technology for military usage. That is a point where we cannot allow it.”

Danon is also concerned about the rise of radical jihadist forces in the nations surrounding Israel.

“The rise of radical jihad is a threat not only to Israel,” he says.

“Yes, we are on the frontlines but look what’s happening in Sweden, in the U.K., in France, in Boston. So we have to realize that there are some forces among radical Muslims who are eager to fight against us, but also against the Christians, and we have to fight them back. If we ignore them, they will attack Israel first, but eventually they will attack the U.S.

“In my book, I say we should not use the term ‘Arab Spring’ because with spring you think about something which is beautiful. We should call it the Arab Winter. It is not a spring and we are worried about it because we see the presence of the radical forces all over taking action and we cannot ignore them. If you ignore them, they will become stronger.”

Secretary Of State John Kerry is seeking to launch a new Israel-Palestinian peace initiative. Asked if Israel believes in a two-state solution, Danon declares: “I am against a two-state solution because I see what’s happened today in the Gaza Strip. When we pulled out of Gaza eight years ago, Hamas stepped in and became a terror entity. I do not want to see another terror entity in Judea and Samaria or in our new Palestinian state.

“Today, we understand in Israel that there is no viable partner. With all due respect to all of the great leaders who want to promote peace in the Middle East, you need a partner to promote peace. I do not see a real partner among the Palestinians. Prime Minister Netanyahu said it very clearly: We are willing to negotiate. You are welcome to come and speak with us, but nobody came so far.”

Discussing current U.S.-Israel relations, Danon says: “That is the main topic of my book, the relationship between Israel and the U.S. We can see a change. We saw President Obama at the beginning of his first term taking a side with the Palestinians with his Cairo speech where he spoke about going back to the 1967 lines. And we’re seeing a shift today towards more of a mediator approach.”

Regarding Prime Minister Netanyahu, Danon observes: “What I can tell you from personal experience, it’s the hardest position in the world to be the prime minister of Israel.

“We have a great nation, but the region that we live in is very, very dynamic. So it’s a very demanding position and he is doing the best to protect Israel.

“We invest a lot of time on security issues and unfortunately also a lot of money, but Prime Minister Netanyahu has support from the Israeli people and that’s what counts. We need to do what is good for Israel and not try to satisfy anybody else, including people in Washington or in Europe.”

Nigeria Gay Marriage, Relationship Ban Carries 14-Year Jail Term.

ABUJA, Nigeria — Nigeria’s House of Representatives passed a bill on Thursday to criminalize gay marriage, same-sex “amorous relationships,” and even membership of a gay rights group, defying pressure from Western powers to respect gay and lesbian rights.

The bill, which contains penalties of up to 14 years in prison, passed Nigeria’s Senate in late-2011 but President Goodluck Jonathan must approve it before it becomes law.

Two similar bills have been proposed since 2006 but this is the first time one has passed through the national assembly.

A spokesman for the presidency did not respond to a request for comment.

As in much of sub-Saharan Africa, anti-gay sentiment and persecution of homosexuals is rife in Nigeria, so the new legislation is likely to be popular.

Under existing Nigerian federal law, sodomy is punishable by jail, but this bill legislates for a much broader crackdown on homosexuals and lesbians, who already live a largely underground existence.

While European countries, most recently France, have moved to offer same-sex couples the same legal rights enjoyed by heterosexuals, many African countries are seeking to tighten laws against homosexuality.

Britain and some other Western countries have threatened to cut aid, a threat which has helped hold back or scupper such legislation in aid-dependent nations like Uganda and Malawi.

They have little leverage over Nigeria, whose budget is funded by its 2-million-barrel-per-day oil business.

“Persons who enter into a same-sex marriage contract, or civil union commit an offense and are each liable on conviction to a term of 14 years in prison,” the bill says.

“Any person who registers, operates or participates in gay clubs, societies and organizations or directly or indirectly makes public show of same-sex amorous relationship in Nigeria commits an offense and shall each be liable on conviction to a term of 10 years in prison.”

Israel Police: One of Jerusalem’s Most-Revered Churches Vandalized.

Image: Israel Police: One of Jerusalem's Most-Revered Churches Vandalized

An Israeli border guard stands next to the vandalized Church of the Dormition on May 31.

JERUSALEMIsrael police say an investigation is underway to find vandals who defaced one of Jerusalem’s best-known churches.

Spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the vandalism was discovered on the Church of the Dormition in Jerusalem’s Old City early Friday. The church is built on the site where many Christians believe the Virgin Mary died.

Rosenfeld said that along with anti-Christian slurs, the words “price tag” were found scrawled on the church’s exterior. He said police are searching for the perpetrators.

That phrase is usually used by a fringe minority of Jewish extremists to protest what they perceive as the Israeli government’s pro-Palestinian policies and retaliation for Palestinian attacks.

Mosques, churches, dovish Israeli groups, and even Israeli military bases have been vandalized with “price tag” damage in recent years.

Boston Bombing Suspect Claims to Mother That He’s Innocent.

MAKHACHKALA, Russia — The remaining suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings has recovered enough to walk and assured his parents in a phone conversation that he and his slain brother were innocent, their mother told The Associated Press on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the father of a Chechen immigrant killed in Florida while being interrogated by the FBI about his ties to the slain brother maintained that the U.S. agents killed his son “execution-style.”

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, walked without a wheelchair to speak to his mother last week for the first and only phone conversation they have had since he has been in custody, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva told the AP.

In a rare glimpse at Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s state of mind, he told her he was getting better and that he had a very good doctor, but was struggling to understand what happened, she said.

Urgent: Is Obama Telling the Truth on IRS, Benghazi Scandals?

“He didn’t hold back his emotions either, as if he were screaming to the whole world: What is this? What’s happening?,” she said.

The April 15 bombings killed three people and wounded more than 260. Elder brother, 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev, was killed in a shootout with police, and Dzhokhar remains in a prison hospital after being badly wounded.

“I could just feel that he was being driven crazy by the unfairness that happened to us, that they killed our innocent Tamerlan,” their mother said, standing by the family’s insistent belief that their children are innocent.

The Tsarnaevs met the AP in their new apartment in a 14-story building in a well-to-do area of Makhachkala, the capital of the restive Caucasus province of Dagestan. The apartment had no furniture apart from a TV, a few rugs, and wallpaper materials lying on the floor.

Anzor Tsarnaev, the suspects’ father, said they had bought it for Tamerlan, his wife, and their young daughter in the expectation that they would move to Makhachkala later this year.

He added that they planned to turn their old home in a dingy district on the outskirts of town into a dentist’s office, so that Dzhokhar, a dental hygiene student, could work out of it after completing his studies.

“All I can do is pray to God and hope that one day fairness will win out, our children will be cleared, and we will at least get Dzhokhar back, crippled, but at least alive,” Tsarnaev said.

Separately, at a news conference in Moscow, the father of a 27-year-old mixed martial arts fighter who was killed during FBI questioning accused agents of being “bandits” who executed his son.

Abdul-Baki Todashev showed journalists 16 photographs that he said were of his son, Ibragim, in a Florida morgue. He said his son had six gunshot wounds to his torso and one to the back of his head and the pictures were taken by his son’s friend, Khusen Taramov.

It was not immediately possible to authenticate the photographs.

The FBI says Todashev was being questioned by an FBI agent and two Massachusetts state troopers about his ties to Tamerlan Tsarnaev, as well as about a 2011 triple slaying in Massachusetts.

Three law enforcement officials said initially that Ibragim Todashev had lunged at the FBI agent with a knife, although two of them later said it was no longer clear what had happened.

The father said his son was “100 percent unarmed.”

Taramov confirmed Thursday that he had taken some pictures of Ibragim Todashev’s body at an Orlando funeral home and sent them to the father. He said Ibragim Todashev had a decorative sword with a broken handle, but that it was not a weapon.

“The sword wouldn’t cut nothing,” Tamarov said. “I played with it many times. It wasn’t sharp from any angle. It would do the same harm as a piece of wood.”

A spokesman for the Boston FBI declined to comment Thursday on the claim that Todashev was unarmed.

The father said Taramov told him that U.S. agents interrogated him on the street while five officials interrogated Todashev in his Florida house for eight hours on May 22, the night he was shot.

Todashev’s father said that his son moved to the U.S. in 2008 on a study exchange program and met Tsarnaev at a boxing gym in Boston in 2011, about a year before he moved to Orlando. He said the two were “not particularly close friends.”

Prior to last month’s bombings, Todashev underwent an operation for a sports injury and was on crutches, making it physically impossible for him to have been involved in the bombings, his father said.

He added that Todashev had recently received a green card and was planning to return to Chechnya for the summer last Friday, two days after he was killed.

The father said he and his brother were interviewed at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow on Thursday as they sought a visa to take his son’s body back to Chechnya.

FBI agents interrogated the younger Todashev twice before the night he was shot, his father said. He said his son told him that he thought Tsarnaev had been set up to take the blame for the bombings.

“I’d only seen and heard things like that in the movies — they shoot somebody and then a shot in the head to make sure,” Todashev said.

“These just aren’t FBI agents, they’re bandits,” he added.

The Tsarnaevs’ parents have held fast to their belief that their sons were framed. Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, dressed all in black and still visibly distressed, showed AP several YouTube videos on an iPad she claimed cleared her sons. They could not be authenticated by the AP.

“I remember when our cat was sick, Tamerlan was sick himself for two days afterward, because he was so worried about her,” Tsarnaeva said.

She said Tamerlan told her about Todashev, and that she and her husband had invited him to visit them in Russia, though he never came.

Tamerlan later told them that he and Todashev were unlikely to continue training together since they practiced different sports, and he appeared to have lost track of him after Todashev moved to Florida, Tsarnaeva added.

Assad Vows to Attack Israel.

Image: Assad Vows to Attack Israel

Syrian President Bashar Assad said in an interview broadcast Thursday that he is “confident in victory” in his country’s civil war, and he warned that Damascus would retaliate for any future Israeli airstrike on his territory.
Assad also told the Lebanese TV station Al-Manar that Russia has fulfilled some of its weapons contracts recently, but he was vague on whether this included advanced S-300 air defense systems.

Editor’s Note: Iran Will Have Nuclear Weapon By 2014 — Watch Urgent Briefing Now!

The comments were in line with a forceful and confident message the regime has been sending in recent days, even as the international community attempts to launch a peace conference in Geneva, possibly next month. The strong tone coincided with recent military victories in battles with armed rebels trying to topple him.

The interview was broadcast as Syria’s main political opposition group appeared to fall into growing disarray.

The international community had hoped the two sides would start talks on a political transition. However, the opposition group, the Syrian National Coalition, said earlier Thursday that it would not attend a conference, linking the decision to a regime offensive on the western Syrian town of Qusair and claiming that hundreds of wounded people were trapped there.

Assad, who appeared animated and gestured frequently in the TV interview, said he has been confident from the start of the conflict more than two years ago that he would be able to defeat his opponents.

“Regarding my confidence about victory, had we not had this confidence, we wouldn’t have been able to fight in this battle for two years, facing an international attack,” he said. Assad portrayed the battle to unseat him as a “world war against Syria and the resistance” — a reference to the Lebanese Hezbollah, a close ally.

“We are confident and sure about victory, and I confirm that Syria will stay as it was,” he said, “but even more than before, in supporting resistance fighters in all the Arab world.”

Assad has said he would stay in power at least until elections scheduled in 2014, but he went further in the interview, saying he “will not hesitate to run again” if the Syrian people want him to do so.

Taking a tough line, he also warned that Syria would strike back hard against any future Israeli airstrike.

Earlier this month, Israel had struck near Damascus, targeting suspected shipments of advanced weapons purportedly intended for Hezbollah. Syria did not respond at the time.

Assad said he has informed other countries that Syria would respond next time. “If we are going to retaliate against Israel, this retaliation should be a strategic response,” he said.

Russia’s S-300 missiles would significantly boost Syria’s air defenses and are seen as a game-changer, but Assad was unclear whether Syria has received a first shipment.

Earlier Thursday, Al-Manar had sent text messages to reporters with what it said was an excerpt from the interview.

The station quoted Assad as saying Syria had received a first shipment of such missiles. The Associated Press called Al-Manar after receiving the text message, and an official at the station said the message had been sent based on Assad’s comments.

In the interview, Assad was asked about the S-300s, but his answer was general.

He said Russia’s weapons shipments are not linked to the Syrian conflict. “We have been negotiating with them about different types of weapons for years, and Russia is committed to Syria to implement these contracts,” he said.

“All we have agreed on with Russia will be implemented and some of it has been implemented recently, and we and the Russians continue to implement these contracts,” he said.

Earlier this week, Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon said Israel considered the S-300s in Syrian hands a threat and signaled it was prepared to use force to stop delivery. Israel had no comment Thursday.

The S-300s have a range of up to 200 kilometers (125 miles) and can track and strike multiple targets at once. Syria already possesses Russian-made air defenses.

The U.S. and Israel had urged Russia to cancel the sale, but Russia rejected the appeals.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry told Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov this week that the U.S. is concerned about Moscow’s continued financial and military support for the Assad regime, said State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki.

Meanwhile, Assad dismissed Syria’s political opposition as foreign-directed exiles who don’t represent the people of Syria.

The Syrian National Coalition has been meeting for more than a week in Istanbul to expand its membership, elect new leaders and devise a strategy for possible peace talks.

Coalition members got bogged down in personnel issues for much of the time. On Thursday, they announced that under current circumstances, they will not attend peace talks.

In the interview, Assad reiterated that the Syrian government is ready to attend in principle, though he said any agreement reached there would have to be put to a referendum.

“We will go to this conference as the legitimate representatives of the Syrian people. Whom do they represent?” he said of the opposition.

“We know that we are going to negotiate with the countries that stand behind it (the opposition) and not to negotiate with them. When we speak with the slave, we are indirectly negotiating with the master,” he added.

The coalition’s decision not to attend the talks could torpedo the only peace plan the international community has been able to rally behind, although prospects for its success appeared doubtful from the start.

Psaki, the State Department spokeswoman, said she hoped it was not the coalition’s final word on the Geneva conference. She said Robert Ford, the U.S. ambassador to Syria, is in Istanbul trying to help the opposition sort through its internal problems. Once members have decided on issues such as expanded membership and leadership, the U.S. hopes they will recommit to peace talks, Psaki said.

Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, accused the coalition of trying to set preconditions, by demanding that Assad’s departure from office must be the focus of any peace talks. He called such a demand “unrealistic.”

He urged the U.S. and Europe to “restrain those who are encouraging such unacceptable and aggressive approaches on the part of the National Coalition.”

If the diplomatic option is now off the table, following the opposition’s decision, the West, including the U.S., will have to come up with a new approach. President Barack Obama could face renewed pressure to help the rebels militarily.

The opposition linked its decision to stay away from the conference to an ongoing battle for the strategic town of Qusair and the role of Hezbollah in helping Assad.

Editor’s Note: Iran Will Have Nuclear Weapon By 2014 — Watch Urgent Briefing Now!

Iranian-backed Hezbollah is heavily involved in the 12-day-old push to drive rebels from the town. Coalition officials said Thursday that hundreds of peopled wounded in the fighting were trapped in the town.

“The talk about the international conference and a political solution to the situation in Syria has no meaning in light of the massacres that are taking place,” coalition spokesman Khalid Saleh told reporters. He said the group will not support any international peace efforts in light of the “invasion” of Syria by Iran and Hezbollah.

Both sides value Qusair, which lies along a land corridor linking two of Assad’s strongholds — Damascus and an area along the Mediterranean coast. For the rebels, holding the town means protecting their supply line to Lebanon, just 10 kilometers (6 miles) away.

More than 70,000 people have been killed in the 26-month-old Syrian conflict that has had increasingly sectarian overtones. Members of Syria’s Sunni Muslim majority dominate the rebel ranks and Assad’s regime is mostly made up of Alawites, an offshoot sect of Shiite Islam.

Petraeus Working for Private Equity Firm.

Former CIA Director David Petraeus has a new job with private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co.

The former Army general will chair a group to “study macroeconomic trends and government policies to assess their implications on the firm’s investments,” CNN reports.

The new group, called KKR Global Institute, will advise KKR’s investment teams on due diligence, including in emerging markets.

KKR was one of the first firms with a formal ESG (environmental, social, and governance) policy, and KKR Global Institute is said to be the latest step in that effort. KKR hired former Republican National Committee chair Ken Mehlman in 2008 to head up public affairs.

“I am very pleased to join such a great team. I have watched KKR evolve as it adapted to the post-financial crisis world and became a go-to partner for companies worldwide,” Petraeus said in a prepared statement. “I look forward to supporting the investment teams in their pursuit of the best opportunities for clients and also being a part of a new initiative to provide additional insights to KKR’s clients and companies.”

Petraeus and KKR co-founder Henry Kravis have known each other for years on the Council of Foreign Relations, and have sought a way to work together, CNN reports.

Petraeus ended his public career in November. He resigned as CIA chief after it was revealed he had an affair with his biographer.
