The video of Warren Weinstein was the first since two videos released in September 2012. Weinstein, the country director in Pakistan for J.E. Austin Associates, a U.S.-based firm that advises a range of Pakistani business and government sectors, was abducted from his house in the eastern city of Lahore in August 2011.

In the video sent Thursday to reporters in Pakistan including The Associated Press, Weinstein called on the U.S. government to negotiate his release.

“Nine years ago I came to Pakistan to help my government, and I did so at a time when most Americans would not come click-here-to-read-the-rest-of-this-story-on-before-its-news-from-now-the-end-begins-nteb-geoffrey-griderhere, and now when I need my government it seems that I have been totally abandoned and forgotten,” Weinstein said during the 13-minute video. “And so I again appeal to you to instruct your appropriate officials to negotiate my release.” source – News Max.

Iran Says It Is Developing New Centrifuges.

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran’s nuclear chief says the country is building a new generation of centrifuges for uranium enrichment but that they need further tests before they can be operational.

Under a landmark nuclear deal reached last month between Iran and world powers, Iran promised not to bring new centrifuges into operation for six months. But the deal does not stop it from developing centrifuges.

In comments reported by state TV late Thursday, nuclear chief Ali Akbar Salehi did not elaborate on how long the building and testing would take.

He also said Iran has a total of 19,000 centrifuges, though he did not say how many were operational. In August, Iran said it had 18,000 centrifuges.

Iran previously gave the U.N. nuclear watchdog information on the new generation of machines.

Obama Orders Military to Review Sexual Assault.

President Barack Obama is ordering a review of the military’s response to sexual assault in the armed forces.

Obama says in a statement provided to The Associated Press that his administration has “an urgent obligation” to respond. The president is giving military leaders a year to report on their progress in responded to the crime — including in the military justice system.

The president’s remarks are his first on legislation that would crack down on sexual assault passed by the Senate late Thursday.

Obama says if he doesn’t see progress, he will consider further reforms to “eliminate this crime from our military ranks.”

Obama isn’t specifying what other reforms he would consider. The Senate is debating legislation that would take authority for prosecuting attackers away from commanders.

Pa. Pastor Defrocked after Performing Gay Wedding.

Image: Pa. Pastor Defrocked after Performing Gay WeddingRev. Frank Schaefer

Church officials have defrocked a United Methodist pastor from central Pennsylvania who officiated his son’s gay wedding in Massachusetts.

The Rev. Frank Schaefer of Lebanon had already been suspended. On Thursday, he met with church officials to determine whether he would continue as a pastor.

Schaefer was told to resign from the clergy by Thursday if he could not follow the denomination’s Book of Discipline. But Schaefer says the book discriminates against gay people and says he wouldn’t voluntarily surrender his credentials.

Church spokesman John Coleman says officials decided to defrock him.

Schaefer left the short meeting with church officials without commenting but planned to address the matter later Thursday.

RNC’s Sean Spicer: Boehner’s ‘Frustration’ Fueled Attack on Tea Party.

House Speaker John Boehner‘s lashed out at the tea party and other conservative groups this week out of frustration, says Sean Spicer, communications director for the Republican National Committee.

“The speaker probably feels that he’s been maligned and attacked by these groups who have questioned his leadership and his strategy,” Spicer told “The Steve Malzberg Show” on Newsmax TV.

Story continues below video.

On Thursday, a clearly annoyed Boehner ripped into advocacy groups that have attempted to undermine his leadership, particularly those who forced the GOP to support the government shutdown.

“Frankly, I just think they’ve lost all credibility,” Boehner told reporters at his weekly press briefing.

Spicer believes Boehner’s words were sincere.

“There’s no one that’s fought harder, frankly, than John Boehner,” he said.

Spicer said he believes Republicans must present an alternative to replace the Affordable Care Act.

“We need to be for something. The exact packaging of it is above my pay grade,” he said.

“It is important that we be for something because it’s not just tactically and politically, but it’s our ideas are better.

Jailed Pastor’s Wife to Democrats: Don’t Abandon My Husband.

The wife of an Iranian-American pastor jailed in Iran is devastated that Democrats have abandoned a resolution demanding more sanctions against Iran as well as the release of her husband.

“The government has abandoned my husband and me and the kids,” Naghmen Abedini told “The Steve Malzberg Show” on Newsmax TV.

“I had hoped … our government would put this in the center stage and would not marginalize it.”

Story continues below video.

Pastor Saeed Abedini has been imprisoned in Iran since the summer of 2012 on charges of endangering national security through his Christian evangelical activities — charges he denies.

His supporters say he was in Iran working to build an orphanage with permission of the Iranian government.

On Thursday, House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer withdrew his support for the resolution at the last minute at the request of the Obama administration.

Hoyer was pushing a non-binding House resolution calling on the Islamic nation to allow no-notice inspections of suspect nuclear sites, access to top scientists and the freeing of U.S. citizens “held unjustly.”

But the White House put the kibosh on it, citing Secretary of State John Kerry‘s attempts to hammer out a deal end Iran’s nuclear research program.

“I’m very disappointed. This issue should cross political barriers and I would expect my government, including the Democrats, which also represent my government, they would not abandon their citizens at the time, at a crucial time, and it’s heartbreaking,” Abedini said.

“I know there [are] other issues that I’m not an expert to speak on, but it’s heartbreaking that it’s becoming a political issue.”

Abedini said Iran, by its own admission, has never officially stated her husband broke any law.
“So Iran’s actually holding him illegally for 444 days and silence from our government is actually approval … Silence, knowing that an American citizen’s being held simply because of his Christian faith, he has not broken any of the Iranian law, is just not acceptable,” she said.

“It’s something we should be very passionate about because we would expect our government to protect our fundamental rights … We’re sending a very dangerous message. I don’t understand, I honestly do not understand.”

Saaed Abedini was granted U.S. citizenship in 2010 and had been living with his wife in Boise, Idaho, before the trip to Iran during which he was seized.

Last month, he was moved from Evin Prison to the more dangerous and brutal Rajai Shahr Prison.

Hoyer, with help from House Majority Leader Eric Cantor and Reps. Ed Royce of California and Elliot Engel of New York had hoped to draw up a nonbinding House resolution to put additional pressure on Iran.

Boehner Fires at ‘Misleading’ Conservative Groups – Again.

House Speaker John Boehner Thursday accused outside conservative groups of “misleading their followers” while trying to push House Republicans more toward the right.

For the second day in a row, the Ohio Republican held a news conference to complain about the far right influence that’s being felt in the House from outside conservative groups, reports Roll Call. Just like in Wednesday’s media gathering, he didn’t bother hiding his frustration.

“Frankly, I think they are misleading their followers,” Boehner told reporters. “I think they’re pushing our members in places where they don’t want to be, and frankly I just think they’ve lost all credibility.”

He noted that conservative groups “pushed us into this fight to defund Obamacare,” leading to the two-week government shutdown in October, which the House leader said “wasn’t the strategy I had in mind.”

“The day before the government reopened, one of these groups stood up and said, ‘Well, we never really thought it would work.’

“Are you kidding me?” Boehner exclaimed.

The Ohio Republican insisted his criticism of conservative groups is nothing new, but “there just comes a point where some people step over the line.”

“I don’t really think that I’ve said anything new or anything different than what I’ve felt and what I’ve said in the past,” he continued.

As he did on Wednesday, Boehner criticized some groups for speaking out against the spending deal reached Tuesday by House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan and Senate Budget Chairwoman Patty Murray, even before all the details of their proposal had been released.

“When you have no idea what you’re criticizing, it undermines your credibility,” he said.

The House is scheduled to vote on the Ryan-Murray budget Thursday night. Boehner said that even though many Republican members are protesting the measure, it is his “job and obligation to stand up for conservatives in Congress who want more deficit reductions and stand up for the work that Chairman Ryan did.”

The bipartisan plan, Boehner stressed, balances the national budget within 10 years while not raising taxes. While not having everything Republicans might want, he said it “takes giant steps in the right direction” for the country without compromising core conservative principles.
