A Sound From Heaven.

And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. Acts 2:2

Sound is the vibration of air molecules; the Greek word translated “sound” here is echoes, which means “to reverberate.”

Acts 2:6 says, when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together.

The word noised” is phoneo, meaning “to publish” or “to proclaim.”

Luke is telling us in these two verses that the multitude heard a voice echoing like a mighty rushing wind and the phenomenon was made public.

On Pentecost, God spoke life to the church in much the same way He created heaven and earth.

Ezekiel prophesied to the wind, and the army came alive (Ezekiel 37).

When God speaks to us, His Spirit reverberates in our human spirit.

We can then speak the oracles of God and allow His message to reverberate in the hearts and spirits of others (1 Thessalonians 1:8).

What has the Spirit deposited in your heart that you are burning to speak?.

What message from the Lord are you passionate to share with others?

Lord, open my mouth and baptize me in fire so that I may share Your Word with anyone who will listen.

Empower me to speak Your message. Amen.

A Clear Path to Intimacy.

For if you forgive men when they sin against you , your heavenly Father will also forgive you. Matthew 6:14

Not only do we need daily forgiveness as much as we need daily bread, but we also need to pray daily that we have the grace to forgive others as a lifelong commitment.

It is not easy.

No one ever said it would be.

It has been the hardest thing I have ever had to do, but following this phrase in the Lord’s Prayer is the clearest path to fellowship with God.

It is as though Jesus adds a “P.S.” to the Lord’s Prayer.

It almost seems that that is why He gave us the prayer in the first place!

Why does Jesus add this further statement?.

He is demonstrating which of the petitions was the most important.

The most natural tendency in the world is to want to get even when someone has offended you.

It is as natural as eating or sleeping, and it is instinctual. Jesus is telling us to do something that is not natural but supernatural: totally forgiving people—sometimes those closest to us—for the wrongs they have done to us.

I still struggle in this area myself.

But when I truly and totally forgive, I have crossed over into the supernatural—and have achieved an accomplishment equal to any miracle.

The kingdom of heaven is the domain of the Holy Spirit.

When the Holy Spirit is at home in us, it means He is not grieved.

He can be Himself; He isn’t adjusting to us, but we are adjusting to Him.

When Jesus said, “If you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you,” He was not talking about how to achieve salvation.

He was referring to receiving the anointing of God and participating in an intimate relationship with the Father.

Unless we are walking in a state of forgiveness toward others, we cannot be in an intimate relationship with God.

{ Day 243 }.

But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ.

Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ … that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death.Philippians 3:7-8, 10, NKJV

Paul gave an autobiographical look at what motivated him. Without apology, Paul pointed us to the necessity of fierce abandonment for the sake of one thing.

Paul was not saying that he suffered these things to earn Jesus’s approval, but that in forsaking them, he removed what hindered his ability to experience Jesus to the fullest possible degree.

He purposely narrowed his options. He willingly became a man of one thing.

In verse 12, Paul revealed the inner activity of his soul: “I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.”

The Lord Jesus laid hold of each one of us for a very specific reason.

God had something in mind for you when you were born and when you were born again.

Beloved, we will not accidentally lay hold of the highest things God has called us to.

We must press into them, knowing that the devil will press back.

We must lay hold of the prize, and the only way to accomplish that is by being individuals and churches of extravagant devotion to Jesus.

No other kind of devotion will survive the onslaught of the enemy.

Lord, when my life draws to a close, may I be able, like Paul, to say I counted all things loss as I spent my life in learning how to know You more, to experience a greater intimacy with You, and to love You more.

Paul actually gloried in the privilege of having intimacy with Jesus in suffering, which is a necessary dimension of the kingdom of God.

The Need For Accountability.

Below are links to some of the early news stories on the death at age 42 of Zachery Tims.
As I write this, we don’t yet know the cause of death, but the secular media has reported that an envelope with white powder was found on his body.
Zachery had a wonderful testimony of how God changed his life—which we published in a book, It’s Never Too Late, which is no longer in print, and we featured him inCharisma.
However, he never totally beat the demons that haunted him.
I know that because of personal conversations I had with him after he went through a very messy divorce resulting from his admitted infidelity.

I personally reached out to him.

I know many others did.

I included him in meetings with Jack Hayford and others as a way of trying to network him with other leading pastors, knowing he was vulnerable.

There was a wonderful, warm, loving side to him and that is what drew people to him as a leader.

But there apparently was a dark side few knew.

I don’t want to speculate more than that, but as the story unfolds we will report it online and in print.

Lee Grady has written an excellent column called “What We Must Learn from the Zachery Tims Tragedy,” which I urge you to read.

I recently got this email from an Ministry21 Network member, Faith Frederick.

With her permission, I’m reprinting it below because she voices the heart cry of why we created this relational network.

Meanwhile, if you harbor a dark side, I appeal to you to get help before it’s too late.

Whether it’s through M21 or not, please get help.

Dear Steve:

In light of the recent news about Zachery Tims, I just want to say how I appreciate what you are doing through Ministry21 Network.

I pray there would be someway that more pastors would participate.

If there is anything that I can do please let me know.

My heart is grieved because as we look at so many in ministry today, the values that we were raised with seem to be forgotten.

I just wanted to reach out and say that as you are faithful to proclaim the message of integrity may God richly bless you and Joy.

Pastor Accused of Terrorist Links Freed From Prison.

(Feng Zi/Color China Photo/AP Images)

Roshan Kuma is free indeed—and not just free in Christ.

The Gospel for Asia missionary was set free from prison on Aug. 10 after a trial exonerated him of bogus charges of associating with a terrorist group.

Though he always remained free in spirit, Kuma suffered plenty before a court declared him innocent.

He spent 17 months in prison on a false accusation that he worked with the Maoists, an anti-government terrorist group in Asia.

“In spite of spending more than a year of suffering in prison, Pastor Roshan’s vision for serving Jesus never dimmed.

He still has an unquenchable thirst and passion for the ministry,” says Dr. K.P. Yohannan, Gospel for Asia president and founder.

“He continues to serve in the same area where there’s a lot of Maoist activity, which causes many people to live in fear.

Yet he has a successful and wonderful ministry in this small village.”

Kuma, and his brother-in-law, M.T. Joshri, were arrested March 10, 2010.

In some parts of South Asia, the Maoists are a popular political party, but in the country where Kuma lives, they are most often insurgents who terrorize citizens.

The country’s prime minister calls them the “single biggest internal security challenge ever faced by our country.”

Some in his village believe the accusations against the missionary pastor originated with anti-Christian extremists unhappy with the growth of the church.

Although Kuma was in prison, he refused to give up his calling to share the gospel of Jesus Christ.

He told his fellow prisoners about the love of Jesus and many chose to follow Christ.

Kuma also started a prayer meeting in the jail.

The Lord was faithful to safeguard the pastor’s flock.

When he was arrested, Kuma was pastor of a church with about 100 members.

In spite of their leader’s arrest and imprisonment, the church grew and now has about 125 people attending worship each week.

The believers in Kuma’s village continually prayed for their pastor while he was in prison.

Now, Kuma’s congregation is in the midst of constructing a new church building, which they plan to dedicate this fall.

“Please pray for Pastor Roshan, that God would continue to use him mightily for the Kingdom,” Yohannan says.

Praise the Lord for using Pastor Roshan in prison, and for the inmates who chose to follow Jesus.

Pray that they will stand firm in their faith–even while they are in prison.

Survey: Many Americans Confuse Scripture for Superhero Mantras.

Superheroes can teach us moral lessons in the battle between good and evil, but heroes of faith offer timeless truths in line with God’s Word.

That’s why it’s somehwat troublesome that so many Americans are confusing Captain America’s messages of triumph with quotes from the Bible.

According to an American Bible Society Survey, 63 percent of U.S. adults incorrectly attributed a 2 Corinthians 4:8“We often suffer, but we are never crushed.

Even when we don’t know what to do, we never give up”—to civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr., former President George W. Bush or comic book hero Captain America rather than the Bible.

The survey, which coincides with the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and the release of The Freedom Bible also reveals:

  • Despite significant security measures taken since Sept. 11, only 9 percent of Americans feel safer today than they did prior to Sept. 11. Thirty-six percent felt safer prior to the attacks of Sept. 11 than they do today.
  • Only 4 percent of Americans rely most on professional counseling to help deal with trauma. Four times as many (16 percent) rely most on the Bible.
  • Despite living in a predominantly Christian nation, 82 percent of Americans who have dealt with trauma rely most on sources other than the Bible to cope, including 6 percent of whom say they do not rely on anything.

“Though 10 years have passed since the attacks on the U.S., many of us vividly recall the images and emotions of that day,” says Geof Morin, chief communications officer at American Bible Society.

“In the aftermath of 9/11, we at American Bible Society saw firsthand the power of the Bible to help people deal with unfathomable trauma.”

Headquartered in Manhattan, American Bible Society was on the scene on 9/11 and in the days and weeks following the attacks to minister to first responders and the families of those missing or killed.

Morin says 9/11 forced Americans to choose between being prisoner of the trauma of that terrible day and finding the hope and freedom to move forward.

For thousands of Americans, he adds, the comfort offered through the Bible allowed them to choose freedom.

“The Bible—not politicians, comic book heroes or civil rights activists—was the first to speak out about dealing with trauma and gaining freedom,” agrees Commissioner William Roberts, national commander for The Salvation Army, a collaborator on The Freedom Bible project.

The Freedom Bible highlights stories of how the Bible has helped people to overcome trauma.

Not a new translation, The Freedom Bible is the first to highlight more than 3,500 verses that refer to various aspects of freedom, including from fear, from suffering, from loss, from anger, from guilt and more.
