HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Museum of Natural Science is preparing for the upcoming Maya “doomsday” scenarios by launching an exhibit to teach visitors about the ancient culture and debunk the myth that they predicted the end of the world would come Dec. 21, 2012.
Curator Dirk Van Tuerenhout (Vahn Teeren-HOUT) says visitors to the “Maya 2012 Prophecy Becomes History” exhibit that opens Friday should walk away understanding the sun will rise Dec. 22.
The exhibit takes visitors back nearly 3,500 years through artifacts borrowed from several American museums and Guatemala City. The pottery, jade carvings, black-and-white rubbings and replicas of mural-filled buildings that still grace the jungles of Mexico all circle back to the Maya calendars.
The calendars helped the Maya track events — especially the rain — and build large cities.
