1. I am aware that when I preach on giving, I am preaching on the most sensitive subject on which a preacher can preach. It seems people will forgive a preacher for just about anything but preaching on giving. For some reason, for most Baptists, there is an extremely sensitive nerve that runs from the pocket book to the heart.

2. If you have been around here for any length of time, you know that I have never hesitated to preach on giving. I am sure some of you feel like the fellow who was marooned on a deserted island with another fellow. He was walking around ringing his hands, saying to himself, “We are going to die here. No one will ever find us. We are going to die here.” All the time the other fellow was leaning against a coconut tree, enjoying the sun, and acting like he didn’t have a care in the world. The worried fellow said to him, “Aren’t you worried? Don’t you realize that we will probably never be found and will die on this island?” The calm fellow replied, “Nah, I am not worried at all. My tithe is over $1,000.00 a week. My preacher will find me.”

3. The reason I have never hesitated to preach on giving, even though it is a sensitive subject to some, is because it is in the Bible. I believe in preaching the Bible, and therefore, if I preach the Bible I will preach on giving. It may surprise some but the Bible has much to say about a person’s possessions and money. In fact, the Bible has twice as much to say about money as it does faith and prayer combined. Of all that Jesus said, He said more about money and possessions than any other subject. Since it is such a big subject in the Bible, I have no choice but to preach on giving–and all the saints said “Amen!”

4. We have been thinking about what makes great Church members. I can’t talk about great Church members without mentioning giving as one of their characteristics. A great Church member is a giving Church member. Great Church members are not bothered by preaching on giving. They do not get upset or get up and walk out of the service when the preacher announces that his subject is giving. No, they find it a thrilling subject for they know the joy and blessing of giving.

5. In 2 Chronicles 24 we have, in my opinion, one of the great examples of giving in the Bible. It is the story of Joash and his chest. I want us to …
