“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God?”
-1 Corinthians 6:19
In the kingdom of God, a body is different than it is on earth. That extra weight, those wrinkles, a scar – you may think them ugly. But it was a smile that put those wrinkles around your eyes. For mothers, that tummy pooch is the result of bearing a child. The scar is the result of an important life experience. All are a part of your story. And God values that and treasures your body.
We think about all the things about our body that we hate – we’re bald, or we’re getting old, or we’re getting too fat, or we’re too short, or too tall, or too skinny, or whatever it is, corns on our toes. We think about all these things, how our bodies are changing. We think, “Someday, I will die and go to heaven. Who cares about this stupid body?” God cares about your body.
The Apostle Paul points this out all the time when he says, “Your body is a temple.” Your body is a temple, indeed. The Holy Spirit lives in your body, and wherever your body goes, you bring the Spirit of Christ with you – his love, his life. He chose your body. He values it. Your body is an important part of your spirituality.
Prayer: Dear Lord, this is a new thought for me. I never quite viewed my body as such a treasure to you. Thank you for this vessel that you have loaned to me to carry me through life and be a witness to your love. Amen.
Reflection: How does this devotion affect the way you view your body?
