Seniors Group Leader Vows to Kill ‘Death Tax’.

Jim Martin, founder and chairman of the 60 Plus Senior Association, vows that his 7.1 million-member group’s efforts to repeal the estate tax will play a huge role in the 2014 elections.

In an exclusive interview with Newsmax, the man who put the phrase “death tax” on the political map to describe the estate tax predicted a big Republican capture of the Senate because of what he called a “tsunami of senior power reaching gale force this November.”

Virtually every Republican competing for a Senate seat this year supports repealing the estate tax. In 2006, the repeal effort came within three votes of overcoming a Senate filibuster.

Martin also pointed out that there is a growing sentiment among Democrats in and out of Congress to repeal the tax.

“The repeal bill in 2006 passed the House by a vote of 272 to 162,” Martin said, adding that “42 Democrats were on the repeal side and [Georgia Democratic Rep.] Sanford Bishop became the first member of the Congressional Black Caucus to vote to kill the death tax. I suspect his vote had a lot to do with the number of family farms in Georgia that were hit hard by the tax that forced family members to scramble and borrow to pay it.”

Currently, the “death tax” is a 40 percent levy applied to estates over $5.34 million and is indexed for inflation.

Martin cited Frank Blethen, publisher and chief executive officer of the venerable Seattle Times, as one prominent Democrat in the “kill-the-death-tax” camp. Hailed by the left-wing Daily Kos as “the new Citizen Kane,” fourth-generation newsman Blethen runs a newspaper that has been in his family since his great-grandfather Alden bought it in 1896.

“Frank is a liberal Democrat who backed Bill Bradley for president [in the 2000 Democratic primaries] over Al Gore because Gore wasn’t liberal enough,” Martin said with a chuckle.

“I’m a conservative Republican, so we don’t get into talking politics. But the only thing we have in common is something critical: Frank is a vigorous supporter of death tax repeal,” Martin said. “I think practical experience has something to do with it. He’s just seen too many family-owned newspapers like his go under because the families couldn’t pay the tax on the estate of a deceased owner.”

Other major repeal players hailed by Martin include Grover Norquist, head of Americans for Tax Reform — “who never met a tax he doesn’t want to drown in his bathtub,” Martin mused — and Alabama tax attorney Harold Apolinsky, who Martin affectionately calls “the Godfather of repeal.”

“Harold and I have testified before Congress on the harmful effects of this anti-family, anti-small business tax,” Martin said.

The next repeal measure — which is sponsored by South Dakota Sen. John Thune and Texas Rep. Kevin Brady, both Republicans — will have more Democratic support than ever, Martin predicted. But he also noted that nearly all the Democrats running for Senate seats this year oppose repeal.

“That will give Republicans — nearly all of whom are on the repeal side — control of the Senate,” said Martin, who in August of 2009 became one of the first conservatives to forecast the wave in 2010 that gave the GOP its largest majority in the House since 1938.

Martin, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, spelled out the “battlefields” where he and 60 Plus national spokesman and legendary singer Pat Boone plan to energize their members into action.

Three states where Democratic senators are retiring are what Martin called “lead-pipe cinches” for pickup by Republicans candidates. He also said Republican challengers are better than even money to defeat Democratic senators and repeal opponents in Alaska, Arkansas, Louisiana, and North Carolina.

“Mark my words: [Louisiana Sen.] Mary Landrieu is finished,” Martin vowed. “She has won three terms by very tight margins. This year, we’re going all-out to show Louisiana’s senior citizens how she has consistently opposed death tax repeal — and that will make the difference for her opponent.”

The 60 Plus chief went even further than many Republican-leaning pundits and forecast a Republican pickup of the seat of retiring Michigan Democratic Sen. Carl Levin and defeats for Democratic Sens. Mark Udall of Colorado, Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, and Al Franken of Minnesota.

“The senior vote went heavily Republican in 2010 and went for Mitt Romney by 20 percentage points nationwide in 2012,” said Martin. “If other voters who favored Romney turned out for him in the numbers seniors did, we’d be discussing ‘President Romney’ and how he was eager to sign death tax repeal.”

Since he picked up what he calls “my megaphone” and started building 60 Plus nearly two decades ago, Martin has been credited with popularizing the phrase “death tax” to describe the estate tax. In his book “Wealth and Our Commonwealth: Why America Should Tax Accumulated Fortunes,” Bill Gates Sr., father of Microsoft’s co-founder, cites Martin for reviving the phrase.

“Truth be told, President Reagan coined the term many years ago,” Martin told Newsmax. “But I take pride in having hammered it home. A tax ought to have a socially redeeming value. The estate tax has none. Instead it tears away at family businesses and stymies wealth creation and jobs. If Bill Gates Sr., George Soros, and Warren Buffet want to keep the death tax, fine. Make it voluntary and let them pay. But don’t preach to others about how they should be happy to pay. The estate tax needs to die.”

2013 Saw The Lie Of Al Gore’s Global Warming Frozen Solid.

“The entire north polar ice cap will be gone in 5 years” – Al Gore, December 10th, 2007

Daily Mail UK: They went in search evidence of the world’s melting ice caps, but instead a team of climate scientists have been forced to abandon their mission … because the Antarctic ice is thicker than usual at this time of year.

The scientists have been stuck aboard the stricken MV Akademik Schokalskiy since Christmas Day, with repeated sea rescue attempts being abandoned as icebreaking ships failed to reach them.

They went looking for evidence of global warming, and found just the opposite. There is so much ice and snow that they became trapped and needed to be rescued.

Now that effort has been ditched, with experts admitting the ice is just too thick. Instead the crew have built an icy helipad, with plans afoot to rescue the 74-strong team by helicopter.

The expedition is being lead by Chris Turney, a climate scientist, who was hoping to reach the base camp of Douglas Mawson, one of the most famous Antarctic explorers, and repeat observations done by him in 1912 to see what impact climate change had made.

It is thought that the group, which includes scientific researchers and a journalist, will now be able to escape by air after two sea rescues failed.

Australian icebreaker Aurora Australis was unable to reach them because it was not strong enough to break through.

A top-of-the-range Chinese icebreaker, the Snow Dragon (‘Xue Long’), was deployed earlier in the week, and hoped to reach the ship by saturday.

However just after midnight on Friday it too got stuck just six nautical miles from the ship.

The Academic Shokalskiy set off from New Zealand on November 28 to recreate a 100-year-old Australasia expedition first sailed by Sir Douglas Mawson to see how the journey changes using new technology and equipment.

But on Wednesday morning, the boat hit a mass of thick ice sheets and today remains at a stand still.

Chris Turney, an Australian professor who helped organise the voyage on the Russian ship, yesterday posted a photograph on Twitter apparently showing the Chinese vessel, a speck on the horizon beyond an expanse of ice.

‘Everyone well,’ Turney added.

He said trying to break through ice that was too thick would be ‘like driving your car into a brick wall’. Just before 5am on Wednesday, Australia deployed a The Snow Dragon to free the group into open water.

French vessel L’Astrolabe was sent out for back up, alongside Australia’s Aurora Australis, which is carrying food and first aid professionals.

After two days being stranded, passengers hoped to be rescued by the Snow Dragon as it powered through horrific conditions. source – Daily Mail UK.

Jindal: We Don’t Need Government Running Healthcare.

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said Sunday that the glitches plaguing Obamacare exemplifies why the government should not be in charge of health coverage.

“Maybe they will bring in Al Gore, who says he invented the Internet, maybe they will fix the website, but the bigger issue, is this is systematic — we don’t need the government running our healthcare,” Jindal told “Fox News Sunday.”

“The real critical issue is when it comes time to schedule your grandmother’s cancer surgery, what’s going to happen then,” Jindal said.

“This is an incompetent rollout, but its symptomatic of the liberal ideology that believes government should be running our healthcare,” Jindal said.

Asked whether he is considering a run for president in 2016, Jindal evaded the questions saying it was too early to make that decision, but he offered advice for the Republican Party to bring voters back into the fold.

“We can’t just be a party of ‘no,'” said Jindal, who also heads the Republican Governors Association.

“We need to show voters conservative principles work, and to see them working you don’t need to look any further than our state capitols,” Jindal said.

Those 30 states where Republicans are in charge are focusing on school choice, cutting taxes and lowering the unemployment rate, Jindal said.

“We don’t need to change our principles, we don’t need to become a second-level party,” Jindal said. “We need to win the war of ideas.”

World’s Top Climate Change Scientists Admit Computers Got The Effects Of Greenhouse Gases Wrong.

So the question is, I suppose, will huckster con artists like Al Gore give back the millions he’s made on the “green revolution” or at the very least issue an apology and admission of error?

From Daily Mail UK: A leaked copy of the world’s most authoritative climate study reveals scientific forecasts of imminent doom were drastically wrong.

ipcc-intergovernmental-panel-climate-change-global-warming-hoax-al-gore-wmo-unepThe Mail on Sunday has obtained the final draft of a report to be published later this month by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the ultimate watchdog whose massive, six-yearly ‘assessments’ are accepted by environmentalists, politicians and experts as the gospel of climate science.

They are cited worldwide to justify swingeing fossil fuel taxes and subsidies for ‘renewable’ energy.

Yet the leaked report makes the extraordinary concession that the world has been warming at only just over half the rate claimed by the IPCC in its last assessment,  published in 2007.

Back then, it said that the planet was warming at a rate of 0.2C every decade – a figure it claimed was in line with the forecasts made by computer climate models.

But the new report says the true figure since 1951 has been only 0.12C per decade – a rate far below even the lowest computer prediction.

The 31-page ‘summary for policymakers’ is based on a more technical 2,000-page analysis which will be issued at the same time. It also surprisingly reveals: IPCC scientists accept their forecast computers may have exaggerated the effect of increased carbon emissions on world temperatures  – and not taken enough notice of natural variability.

They recognise the global warming ‘pause’ first reported by The Mail on Sunday last year is real – and concede that their computer models did not predict it. But they cannot explain why world average temperatures have not shown any statistically significant increase since 1997.

They admit large parts of the world were as warm as they are now for decades at a time between 950 and 1250 AD – centuries before the Industrial Revolution, and when the population and CO2 levels were both much lower.

The IPCC admits that while computer models forecast a decline in Antarctic sea ice, it has actually grown to a new record high. Again, the IPCC cannot say why.

A forecast in the 2007 report that hurricanes would become more intense has simply been dropped, without mention.

This year has been one of the quietest hurricane seasons in history and the US is currently enjoying its longest-ever period – almost eight years – without a single hurricane of Category 3 or above making landfall.

One of the report’s own authors, Professor Myles Allen, the director of Oxford University’s Climate Research Network, last night said this should be the last IPCC assessment – accusing its cumbersome production process of ‘misrepresenting how science works’ Read the rest of the story on Daily Mail UK…

Al-Jazeera America Features Anti-Israel Author in Debut.

Anti-Israel author Stephen Walt
Anti-Israel author Stephen Walt (Facebook)

The newly launched television news network Al-Jazeera America, which has stated that it aims to present more objective coverage than its Middle Eastern counterpart, featured noted anti-Israel author Stephen Walt as its first guest.

Walt, a professor of international affairs at Harvard University, gained notoriety for co-authoring the controversial book “The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy,”which uses long-held anti-Semitic conspiracy theories of Jewish manipulation to allege that pro-Israel Americans manipulate U.S. policy to serve Israel’s selfish interests.

In his interview on Al-Jazeera America posted on YouTube by the Washington Free Beacon, Walt was critical of Egypt’s past and current rulers—Hosni Mubarak, the Muslim Brotherhood and the Egyptian military—calling them all “stupid.” He concluded his interview by noting that the U.S. provides military aid to Egypt mainly to protect Israel.

Al-Jazeera America is a new venture by the Qatar-based television network Al-Jazeera. In January, Al-Jazeera announced it had purchased former Vice President Al Gore’s struggling Current TV to serve as a distribution network for its foray into the American media.

But some have been openly critical of the new network’s ties to the government of Qatar.

“To Americans, Al-Jazeera purports to be the equivalent of CNN or Fox or MSNBC—an independent purveyor of news. Yes, Americans know that most media leans left and a little bit of it leans right, but the networks themselves are generally free of government manipulation. Al-Jazeera, however, is a wholly owned arm of the government of Qatar,” Shoshana Bryen, a Middle East analyst for the Jewish Policy Center, wrote for the Gatestone Institute.

While Qatar is officially a U.S. ally, its ruling royal family has forged close ties with Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood. Last month, nearly two-dozen Al-Jazeera staffers quit over what they called pro-Muslim Brotherhood bias in its coverage of events in Egypt.

Al Jazeera America Launches With Focus on News, Not Opinions.

Image: Al Jazeera America Launches With Focus on News, Not Opinions

By Michael Mullins

Al Jazeera America launches Tuesday. With bureaus located in 12 major U.S. cities, and supported by an international network of news correspondents, Al Jazeera America will have 900 employees, of which 400 are newsroom employees, The New York Times reported.

The type of news coverage that will be offered by Al Jazeera America, which hopes to compete with the likes of cable news heavyweights like Fox News, CNN, and MSNBC, is being compared to a PBS-style of news reporting, heavy on content and light on opinion.

Urgent: Should Obamacare be Repealed? Vote Here Now

“Viewers will see a news channel unlike the others, as our programming proves Al Jazeera America will air fact-based, unbiased and in-depth news,” said Ehab Al Shihabi, the channel’s acting chief executive, on a news conference call last week, The New York Times reported.

“There will be less opinion, less yelling, and fewer celebrity sightings,” Al Shihabi added in the call.

Headquartered in New York City, Al Jazeera America will broadcast its news from the first floor of the New Yorker Hotel near midtown Manhattan.

The American offshoot of the Persian Gulf-based television news network Al Jazeera will be available in approximately 48 million U.S. households, and is in talks with Time Warner Cable to expand its reach further.

Shortly after acquiring Al Gore’s Current TV for the purchase price of $500 million in January, Time Warner Cable very publicly dropped Current TV in order to avoid broadcasting Al Jazeera America.

Al Jazeera has long been considered anti-American by some for having aired messages from deceased al-Qaida terror leaded Osama Bin Laden and its critical coverage of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

As part of its attempt to win over American audiences, Al Jazeera America recently altered its broadcast news model, which was originally going to have an international bent, to a more domestic view of the news, The Times reported.

Bob Meyers, president of the National Press Foundation, wrote in his blog last week that Al Jazeera America “could be fun, and even beneficial, to watch.”

“I am reminded of three other news organization launches in the U.S. that were transformative,” Myers added in the blog post. “One was the launch of CNN on June 1, 1980; the second was the launch of Bloomberg News in 1990; and the third was the launch of Politico in 2007.”

As for how much the venture will cost, Al Jazeera English Executive Paul Eedle, who is reportedly assisting with the launch, would not discuss figures with The Times, saying only, “We’re here because we think our journalistic mission has something to offer America.”

The network has a substantial amount of money behind it, being owned by members of the royal family of House of Thani, which has a net worth of $60 billion, primarily from oil generated revenue.

Despite being owned by the government of Qatar, the personalities who will be relaying the news from Al Jazeera America will be familiar to U.S. audiences.

The well-known news personalities will include: former CNN anchor Soledad O’Brien, who signed up to be a special correspondent for Al Jazeera America in July; NBC news veteran John Seigenthaler, who will be a news anchor during the network’s prime-time hour; and Emmy Award-winning journalist Sheila MacVicar, among others.

Sen. Leahy: Border Additions ‘Recipe for Waste, Fraud, and Abuse’.

Image: Sen. Leahy: Border Additions 'Recipe for Waste, Fraud, and Abuse'

Saturday, 22 Jun 2013 04:54 PM

By Todd Beamon

Sen. Patrick Leahy attacked the increased border security measures added to the proposed immigration reform bill in the U.S. Senate as a bonanza to the huge corporate interests that are quietly backing the legislation.

“I am sure there are federal contracting firms high-fiving at the prospect of all of the spending demanded by Senate Republicans in this amendment,” the Vermont Democrat, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said on the Senate floor on Friday.

“The litany of expensive services, technology, and hardware mandated by this package is combined with an inexplicable waiver of many normal contracting rules,” Leahy said,Briebart News reports. “This is a potential recipe for waste, fraud, and abuse.”

Under the amendment — proposed on Thursday by Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York and two Republicans, Sens. Bob Corker of Tennessee and John Hoeven of North Dakota — the number of U.S. Border Patrol agents would be doubled, to a total of 40,000.

It also would require the increased use of surveillance technology along the border. This would include unmanned drones, cameras, and ground sensors.

In addition, the amendment would double the amount of border fencing required under the legislation, from 350 miles to 700 miles. Currently, about 40 miles of fencing is situated along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Leahy, who says he will begrudgingly support the amendment when it comes up for a vote on Monday, called the increased border measures “a Christmas wish list for Halliburton,” Briebart reports.

Numerous special interests have pushed for immigration reforms to benefit their industries, according to Briebart.

For instance, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg’s advocacy group, Fwd.us, includes such technology heavyweights as Google’s Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt and Al Gore’s billionaire business partner John Doerr. They have lobbied for provisions to benefit Silicon Valley firms.

The group has a fund-raising goal of $50 million.

“We will use online and offline advocacy tools to build support for policy changes,” Zuckerberg said, Briebart reports. “And we will strongly support those willing to take the tough stands necessary to promote these policies in Washington.”
