White House: Young Are Flocking to Obamacare.

The White House insisted Monday that there had been a “surge” in young Obamacare enrollees, disputing doubts from a Democratic Virginia lawmaker that there wouldn’t be enough millennials signing up “to make this bill work,” reports said.

Retiring Rep. Jim Moran told radio station WAMU in an interview Friday that people under 35 “are less likely to sign up.”

“I think they feel more independent,” he said. “I think they feel a little more invulnerable than prior generations. But I don’t think we’re going to get enough young people signing up to make this bill work as it was intended to financially.”

“I just don’t know how we’re going to do it, frankly,” he added. “If we had a solution, I’d be telling the president right now.”

White House spokesman Jay Carney, though acknowledging Obamacare’s “shaky rollout,” brushed aside Moran’s concern, The Hill reported.

Carney asserted instead that there had been “a significant surge in the percentage of young Americans under 35 enrolling.”

“Those numbers are consistent with what we saw in Massachusetts,” Carney said.

“And if you ask the Republicans in Massachusetts who supported and, in one case signed, into law the health insurance reform, which is the closest thing to a model for the president’s Affordable Care Act, they would say that that worked and that there the percentage of young people who enrolled was adequate.”

Harvard economics professor David Cutler, one of the ACA’s architects, has warned that if too few young people are covered, Obamacare won’t be able to offset the costs of insuring older and sicker Americans, sending the new law into a “death spiral.”

The Hill reported that the Department of Health and Human Services said 30 percent of Obamacare enrollees were 34 and under, and announced last week that 3 million individuals had purchased coverage.

The administration originally estimated 7 million consumers would enroll, with 39 percent ages 18-34, The Hill reported.

In Virginia, WAMU reported, more than 40,000 Virginians signed up for Obamacare; only 27 percent of those were young adults.

Parents Shocked When Kids Can’t Join Obamacare Family Plan.

Many parents are shocked to discover when they sign up for Obamacare that their children are ineligible to join the family marketplace plan, leaving some kids temporarily in limbo without insurance coverage, a CBS News report said Monday.

“The children are getting stuck in this spot where we’ve enrolled the parent but we can’t bring the children back on the family plan,” said Maria Proulx, senior legal counsel for Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Hampshire.

That’s because they could instead be eligible for Medicaid or a state’s version of
the Children’s Health Insurance Program — also known as CHIP — the low-income health insurance program for children who don’t qualify for Medicaid.

Other parents are finding that their children are eligible for Medicaid but they are not.

Russell Clouden of Florida says he was stunned to learn his 14-year-old daughter, a horse show jumper, wouldn’t be enrolled in the family plan because she might qualify for Florida Healthy Kids, the state’s version of CHIP. The federal government still hasn’t transferred roughly 90,000 Medicaid files over to Florida officials. She is awaiting insurance coverage.

“Based on your income, they’ll separate your kids from your primary policy and they shift them off to Medicaid or Healthy Kids and there’s no way you can bring them back,”  Clouden said. “I’m kind of in limbo with her because I’m just hoping she doesn’t get injured or sick. Without insurance, you’ve kind of got a knot in your stomach watching her jumping,” he told CBS.

Florida insurance broker Matthew Dinkel said parents have been calling him every day for an update. “They canceled their old plans that covered their entire family, and now they have coverage but their kids don’t.”

Jessica Waltman, of the National Association of Health Underwriters, said, “It’s a nationwide issue that we’ve heard time and again, and it could have very significant coverage issues for families.”

Welcome to our Freedom-From-Bullying Movement.

When we began The Protectors freedom-from-bullying movement about eight years ago, a unique movement in that it works within both faith-based and values-based organizations, some thought it was a good but not necessary creation–like places that change your vehicle’s oil.

Now according to a recent Harris Poll, bullying is the #1 concern among both parents and students–surpassing sex, drugs and gang activity.

Hardly a week goes by when bullying does not make it into our nation’s media and our collective mind and worry, reminding me of that ominous phrase: You might not be interested in war, but war is interested in you. More and more studies reveal that this intentional form of abuse affects most everyone the way a stone creates waves through water. It’s as if we’ve been re-introduced to an old enemy that we thought we knew but didn’t, leading to anxiety, and hardly know how to resist, leading to paralysis and even more anxiety.
But there is a way out, which is what this fresh blog is all about. This path toward freedom, justice and the defense of human dignity is forged by helping all four “characters” in the “Theater of Bullying” (Bullies, Targets, Bystanders and Authority) change their role. Because life really is a movie. And when it comes to bullying, the ultimate question is: What role will adults as well as children play?
And let me leave you with this distilling insight, which will help you understand the primary goal and orientation of this new blog: Knowledge alone will not transform this problem any more than consuming one lone vitamin leads to health. Knowledge alone does not set captives free. We have plenty of knowledge about bullying–some of which is conflicting. Our children, their parents and their  teachers don’t need another Ph.D. to tell them that bullying is wrong and harmful. This is confirmed within the blacksmith of our troubled souls. What we lack and what we need as a people is the will, courage, conviction and indignation to confront it and diminish it. This will require sacrifice and for some, suffering. Some will rise to this noble, life-affirming challenge and some will not–just like the characters in our favorite movies.
So welcome. Let’s change history within history, and in the process grow courage, character and leadership for life, not just for the children in our lives, but for the adults as well.
