After a year of problems with headlines about Obamacare, the Benghazi bombing, NSA spying, and the IRS targeting of conservative groups, MSNBCHardball” host Chris Matthews said Friday it’s beginning to feel like a “very long presidency” for Barack Obama.

“It feels like a very long presidency now. It feels like the seventh or eighth year of a presidency. It doesn’t feel like the fifth,” Matthews said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

“It’s a terrible year for the president,” he added.

Matthews, a longtime vocal supporter of the president, admitted it wasn’t “just a bad year, in terms of the [Obamacare] rollout.” He explained there was an “erosion in interest” in President Obama.

ObamaCareYou Can Win With The Facts

Matthews interviewed the president earlier this month before a student audience at American University. In recent months, he has been more critical of the president’s leadership skills.

A sense of enthusiasm has been lacking since he was reelected last year, Matthews observed.

“There wasn’t that rejuvenation that comes with a reelection. There was no sense of ‘Wow.’ I think that’s hurt him a lot,” he said.

Matthews said previous presidents who had served two terms managed “to come back, just in terms of survival, the last year or two” of their second term. He said Obama would have to “come back with some gusto” if he is to be one of them.

Matthews To Ask Obama About Management Style; ‘What’s His Method?’.

MSNBC‘s “Hardball” host Chris Matthews said he will ask President Barack Obama about executive performance and management during his half-hour interview Thursday evening.

“It’s stuff that I talk about all the time on my program, which is you need to have a plan or a design for executive performance,” Matthews told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Thursday.

Story continues below video.

“I’m going to ask him about the questions . . . about executive management, because it’s a key question,” he said.

Matthews will interview the president in Washington, D.C., as part of the “Hardball College Tour.” It will take place before a student audience at American UniversityPolitico reported.

His list will include questions about management of the Obamacare rollout and the president’s method for governing, Matthews said.

“There wasn’t one person with that unique responsibility (in charge of the Obamacare rollout). No other responsibilities but that. A unique accountability system doesn’t seem to have been there,” he said.

Matthews indicated he would ask specifics about the president’s management style during the interview. Matthews said he sees his job, not as a referee, but to “make sure he answers questions.”

“I’ll get to executive performance, command structure and chain of command, where clearly people get in trouble if they don’t deliver,” Matthews said. ” What’s his model of running the White House? I want to know what it is.

“How do cabinet members respond to the president’s demands, his program? How does he make sure what he wants to get done gets done? What’s his method? Presidents have different methods. It’s hard to see sometime what his method is,” Matthews added.

Matthews said he thought the president wanted to appear before a student audience to encourage young people to take personal responsibility for their health care and sign up for Obamacare. The interest among young people to enroll in Obamacare has been lackluster, with less than one-third saying they intend to participate, according to a Harvard Institute of Politics poll.

“I think he’s going to try to encourage young people to participate and join the exchange and get going and take personal responsibility for their health care, especially if they get in an accident, or something like that, or hit by a disease,” Matthews said.

Chris Matthews Calls Ted Cruz a ‘Political Terrorist’.

MSNBC host Chris Matthews called tea party Republican Sen. Ted Cruz a “political terrorist” for his threat to shut down the government over funding for Obamacare and his opposition to raising the federal debt ceiling.

“I believe it’s terrorism,” Matthews said Wednesday on his program, “Hardball.” “This is the first time I’ve seen a political party, or even a fraction of it, say that their No. 1 goal is to shut down the American government, kill a bill that’s already been passed by Congress, and refuse to pay bills already run up by Congress in an attempt to basically risk default.”

Cruz’s efforts are “an attempt to destroy all we know of the republican form of government in this country,” Matthews added.

Republican strategist Steve Schmidt, appearing on the show, said he comes from a different wing of the party than Cruz, but objected to the use of the term “terrorist.” Matthews said Schmidt was welcome to use his own term, but that he was standing by the term “political terrorist” or just “terrorist for short.”

“I think he’s a demagogue, I think he’s irresponsible,” Schmidt said. “But I think when we use the word ‘terrorist’ we apply that to the Boston bombers, we apply that to the September 11th hijackers — I’m not comfortable with the word.”

Democratic strategist David Axelrod agreed saying he was uncomfortable using the word out of respect for the victims of violent terrorists.
