Two Missing As Ex-Militant Figure “Ogun Boss” Attacks Bayelsa Community In Police Gunboats.

By SaharaReporters, New York

There was pandemonium in Peremabiri, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa, in the early hours of Saturday as youths from the area resisted a gunboat attack launched by ex-militant leader Monday Paul aka “Ogun Boss”.

Casualty figures remained unknown, but sources in the community said two persons were missing.

SaharaReporters learnt that the ex-militant leader got the Bayelsa Police Commissioner to release three police gunboats as well as police escorts for the operation.

The police command recently lost 11 policemen who were part of 50 policemen deployed to provide cover to an ex-militant.

A source in the community told SaharaReporters by telephone on Saturday morning that the police gunboat approached the coastal community about midnight and commenced shooting to scare residents.

The source stated that the youths of the community quickly mobilized and resisted the three gunboats which fired at the community from the creeks for more than 30 minutes.

The source said that the unarmed youths hauled stones at the boats until the gunfire attracted a naval patrol team assigned to protect a Shell flow station in the community.

The intervention of the naval team reportedly led to the arrest of the attacking gunboats and their occupants who were handed over to security agents in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa capital.

A source accused the ex-militant of seeking to foist his men as the leaders of Peremabiri community and to undermine the community’s current leadership with whom he had been having a running battle.

The police in Yenagoa refused to comment on the police commissioner’s  alleged deployment of policemen and three gunboats for “illegal operation.”

Rivers Police Commissioner Mbu To Be Removed.

CP of Rivers, Joseph Mbu
By SaharaReporters, New York

Joseph Mbu, who has had a controversial career as the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, has been removed from his post, a source at police headquarters in Abuja has informed SaharaReporters. The source said the commissioner is expected to leave his post at the end of this week. However, the source added that the police hierarchy has made no public announcement of Mr. Mbu’s removal.

The removal of the police commissioner, known to be a crony of Patience Jonathan, the wife of Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan, is coming on the heels of threats by opposition party All Progressives Congress (APC) to block all legislative proposals by Mr. Jonathan until the political crisis believed to be instigated in Rivers State by the President and his wife is resolved.

A police source told SaharaReporters that, barring any last-minute interference by President Jonathan, Mr. Mbu will be sent to the National Institute for Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, Jos as a face-saving measure.

Mr. Mbu has been accused of working to undermine Governor Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers State, a political foe to Mr. Jonathan. The controversial commissioner had often provided cover to members of the political opposition in Rivers State who have sought to cause violence in the state by attempting to hijack the state assembly in an illicit bid to impeach Mr. Amaechi.

In recent weeks, as he sensed his planned removal from Rivers State, Mr. Mbu had placed newspaper adverts in newspaper to congratulate Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police Muhammed Abubakar.

Bamanga Tukur
By Saharareporters, New York

President Goodluck Jonathan finally presented the resignation letter of embattled party chieftain, Bamanga Tukur, to the 63rd meeting of the National Executive Committee of the  Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the party’s secretariat in Abuja today.

The president took the unusual step of reading Mr. Tukur’s resignation letter to members after pulling it out of an envelope.

He praised Tukur, who was also present at the meeting, and said that he had not committed any crime to warrant his forced resignation promising to give him a bigger assignment.

Saharareporters sources stated that the President hopes to make  Mr. Tukur Nigeria’s ambassador to China in coming days.

Saharareporters had revealed last night that Mr. Tukur’s resignation will be made public today at the NEC meeting after he was barred from a crucial caucus meeting at the Aso Rock Villa yesterday.

A new chairman of the party will emerge next week Monday according to President Jonathan.

SaharaReporters Media Warned Of Planned ‘Major’ Assault By Abuja On Its Operators and Operations.

By SaharaReporters, New York

SaharaReporters Media would like to alert its readers, fans, supporters, commentators, columnists and whistle blowers it has learned authoritatively of a plan by the Nigerian government and several of its affiliates and cronies to inflict a major assault on its producers and reporters, and blackmail the website.

Our source says the plan follows the Abuja regime’s worry about the relentless groundbreaking reporting and unflinching by SaharaReporters to compromize, going into the 2015 election year, of the corrupt and incompetent governance in Nigeria.  Part of the plot involves blocking SaharaReporters and SaharaTV reception in Nigeria.

SaharaReporters has in the last five years had incidents of attempted hacking of its website, as well as spurious lawsuits funded by successive Nigerian governments and its agents that we have successfully navigated.   In some cases, we do not know who attempted or implemented those attacks.

While we lack the limitless resources of those who would like to shut down or compromise our operations, we stubbornly intend to continue to expose, with every tool available to us, the elements and practices that hold Nigeria and Africa down.

This pledge is sacrosanct, as we have demonstrated in the past, no matter who or what is in power.  We appeal to all those who seek the best of and for Africa to be resolute and to remain unbowed and unshaken with us, no matter the outcome of this latest plot.

We will provide developments or details as they become available.

Import Waiver Granted First Lady To Import 200 BMW Cars: SaharaReporters Writes Minister Of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala
By Omoyele Sowore

Dear Minister Of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala : It has come to our attention that your Special Assistant on Media, Paul Nwabuikwu, is circulating a press statement to a select group of news outlets and bloggers describing as false a report by SaharaReporters about import waivers obtained by Mrs. Patience Jonathan’s office to import 200 BMW cars for her “Africa First Ladies” summit in 2012.

While your aide’s statement did not dispute the existence of waivers that were ultimately granted to Coscharis Motors to import the cars, he went to great lengths to accuse SaharaReporters of distorting the information released by your office.

We are not in the least surprised that you would authorize your aide’s misleading press release aimed at casting aspersions on us. This mendacious release is consistent with your style of responding to legitimate questions about your conduct as Nigeria’s Minister of Finance. You have established a reputation for intolerance of principled and accurate media reports once they raise questions about your ministerial judgments or reflect poorly on your performance.

You would recall that, on December 3rd, 2013, you published a doctored list of beneficiaries of import waivers in response to pressures mounted on your office by Nigeria’s PUNCH newspaper. Without question, you had hoped to bamboozle the public with this incomplete list. However, we refused to accept your list for publication, having received information from officials who should know that your list was distorted and incomplete, indeed an attempt to hoodwink gullible reporters and Nigerians. Yesterday, your office surreptitiously released an updated list on the web. It is this fuller list that revealed part of how the First Lady has benefited significantly from the questionable dispensation of import waivers to politically connected individuals and firms. We duly acknowledged our source.

The tone of your aide’s press statement makes it clear that you had hoped that your updated list would not become public knowledge. That explains the harsh and predictable attack on our medium.

Since your statement claimed that Mrs. Jonathan did not benefit from the imported BMWs, we urge you to go a step further: produce the list of beneficiaries and providing the chasses numbers of the BMWs imported under the questionable waivers you granted to Coscharis Motors in 2012. In addition, we challenge you to provide evidence that Coscharis Motors imported the vehicles for which the waivers were granted.

You should also do the Nigerian public the great service of explaining why presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati, claimed that the Federal Government had not contributed a dime to the importation of the BMWs, when your office had indeed granted waivers worth N560 million to the controversial auto dealer.

Since you claimed that your latest release was driven by your desire to ensure transparency, we await a detailed response to the issues raised here.

Sincerely,

Omoyele Sowore

Gunmen Strike In Southern Kaduna.

By Saharareporters, New York

A security agent told SaharaReporters late Saturday evening that unknown gunmen had just launched an armed attack on residents of a village close to Zonkwa in Zangon Kataf local government area of Kaduna State.

Our source said the gunmen attacked the village with guns and other dangerous weapons, and then quickly escaped once security agents arrived in response to a distress call.

Details of casualties were still scanty, but our source disclosed he was aware that one person had died while several persons had been rushed to hospital with different degrees of injuries.

The attack came with a few days to Christmas. More than 100 villagers have been killed this year in Attakar land near the boundaries between Kaduna and Plateau States.
