NANS Demands Arrest of Killer Policeman, Sack of Commissioner, DPO In Katsina.

By SaharaReporters, New York

The Senate of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of the policeman who yesterday in Katsina shot and killed Umar Aliyu of the Hassan Usman Polytechnic.

In a statement signed by spokesman Okoye Robinson Chibuzo, NANS condemned the act in strong terms and called on the National Human Rights Commission to investigate the incident and the killings of other students which now number 30, as a matter of urgency.

“We can’t understand what led to the killing of a harmless student by the same persons whose responsibility is to secure his life and property,” the statement said.

“This act of barbarism is a total breach of the fundamental right to life of Umar Aliyu as enshrined in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and can’t be taken as this is a threat to the lives and security of the Nigerian students.”

The students also called on the Inspector General of police to sack the Commissioner of the Katsina State Police Command and the DPO in charge [of the unit], or face “total war” which will be declared against the police for the brutal killing of Nigerian students.

NANS commiserated with the family of Umar Aliyu and the entire students of Kastina for the great loss of one of their future leaders whose life was shortened by a “blood sucking” policeman.

Obasanjo Spearheading A Secret Agenda, Says Colonel Umar.

By SaharaReporters, New York

A former military governor of Kaduna State, retired Colonel Abubakar Dangiwa Umar, has reacted to the ongoing political squabble between President Goodluck Jonathan and former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
In an interview he granted to the Hausa Service of the Voice of America (VOA), which SaharaReporters monitored in Abuja, Mr. Umar called on Nigerians to stop celebrating Obasanjo as a sincere statesman. Instead, he accused Mr. Obasanjo of spearheading a secret agenda tied to his personal political interests.

Mr. Umar, one of the former military officers to have opposed the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, stated that it was dangerous for Nigerians to uncritically take Mr. Obasanjo at his word. He added that Nigerians should realize from the former president’s antecedents that he is a deceitful and insincere man who was complicit in creating the mess Nigeria is in today.

“What is it that [Mr. Jonathan] did not do with impunity?” asked the former military governor. “It was the same man that attempted third term and was confronted headlong. He is the [same] man that destroyed our nation. [He] wanted [former Governor Peter] Odili before it failed due to some challenges with EFCC. He later imposed a sick man as a leader and we are where we are today,” added Mr. Umar.

He further described Mr. Obasanjo as “the same man that gloried and celebrated corruption in Nigeria,” adding that the former president “ensured that corruption got its solid foundation, and today he is the moral voice of Nigeria. It is dangerous and scary. Our citizens should be critical.”

Mr. Umar contended that Mr. Obasanjo did not believe in the principles he wrote about in a leaked letter that descended on Mr. Jonathan with harsh words. “Do not be carried away by his noise about democracy and justice, it is all a ruse. He did [govern Nigeria] and we saw how he was tyrannical, a dictator. It is laughable and dangerous that Obasanjo is the man we want to take seriously. I am begging our people to be critical and thorough so as to unravel his real agenda.”

In the interview, Mr. Umar cautioned Nigerians to recognize that, “There is more to it than what we can see. There are certain things we don’t know. [Obasanjo] said that he gave Generals Babangida, Abdulsalami and Danjuma copies of his letter. Why did he not give [a copy to] General Gowon? It means something is in the offing. And it is scary today that Nigerians are taking Obasanjo seriously. It is important that we look at the message and the messenger critically.”

CSNAC Urges IGP To Release Report On Governor’s Suntai’s Letter to State Assembly.

By SaharaReporters, New York

The Civil Society Network Against Corruption (CSNAC), has urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. M. D. Abubakar to release the report of the investigation demanded on August 27 by human rights lawyerFemi Falana (SAN) concerning the letter purportedly transmitted to the Taraba State House of Assembly by ailing Governor Suntai Danbaba.

Mr. Suntai, who was suffered brain injuries when a plane he was piloting crashed in October 2012, returned to Nigeria and to Taraba State from the United States on August 25 after 10 months of receiving treatment and rehabilitation.

“Barely one day after his return, a letter was delivered to the House declaring the governor’s fitness and readiness for work without affording the public a copy of his medical report of mental and physical fitness,” Mr. Falana had noted in his letter.

“That letter generated heated debate between supporters of the Acting Governor and Governor Suntai,” CSNAC said. “The veracity of the letter also divided the Taraba House of Assembly along lines of allegiance to either the Acting Governor or the returnee ailing Governor. The supporters of Acting Governor Umar, who are in the majority, succeeded in exposing the chicanery of those behind the generation and transmission of the letter with a demand to have a chat with Governor Suntai, who had not seen or spoken with any of them before then.”

Reflecting on developments since then, CSNAC noted the attempt on the life of the late Speaker and his eventual death two weeks ago, and the Deputy Speaker who escaped death by the whiskers last week.

It recalled that Mr. Falana had predicted the grave danger inherent in any failure to investigate the letter to confirm its authenticity, as there were several allegations within and outside Taraba State that it may have been forged by the governor’s handlers.

“In view of the above stated demands and unfavourable political developments currently playing out in that State, it is our expectation that your office must have concluded investigation into the matter, 3 months after, in view of its potential threat to the peace and development of not only Taraba but Nigeria as a whole. We are therefore, by this letter, demanding a copy of the outcome of that investigation.”

CSNAC is a coalition of over 150 anti-corruption organizations “whose primary aim is to constructively combat corruption vigorously and to ensure the effective monitoring of the various Anti-graft agencies in its activities in the fight against corruption and to enthrone transparency, accountability, probity, and total commitment in the fight to eradicate corruption in Nigeria.”

A 30-year-old man, Umar Mohammed Kandahar has been sentenced to death by stoning by a Bauchi State Upper Sharia Court for impregnating his younger sister. However, Umar has appealed the judgement at the Bauchi State Shariah Court of Appeal and filed fresh bail application at the Bauchi State High Court.

Court records made available to newsmen yesterday in Bauchi showed that Umar was arraigned before Upper Sharia Court, Unguwar Jaki by the Bauchi State Shariah Commission, where he was accused of impregnating his younger sister.

Counsel to the Shariah Commission, Mr Dayyabu Ayuba told the court that the suspect, who was married with three wives forcibly had carnal knowledge of his sister, who was taken to his house by their father to take her to school.

Ayuba said instead of taking her to school, Umar had sexual intercourse with her when she was 16 years old and she became pregnant. The offence was contrary to Section 136(1) of the Bauchi State Penal Code Law 2001, Ayuba said.

When asked by the presiding Shariah Court judge, the accused pleaded guilty but denied that he forced her to have sexual intercourse . He said it was consensual as she accepted to have sex with him.

After listening to the testimonies, the Shariah Court Judge, Musa Barde sentenced Umar to death by stoning. He told the court that the accused family suffered because of his detention since 2011 and asked the court to release him on bail to ease the sufferings of his family.

The presiding judge, Justice Aliyu Baba Usman has fixed Monday November 25, 2013 for mentioning of the appeal.

Photos taken at the bizarre “fact-finding” visit to Jalingo by a team led by Senator Hope Uzodinma. It will be the second “fact-finding” trip by Uzodinma to the brain-damaged governor since a small plane he piloted crashed last October near the Yola Airport in Adamawa State.

Uzodinma led a similar delegation to visit Suntai in New York last August, he never told the truth about Suntai’s condition, instead the senator claimed that the ailing governor had recovered from injuries sustained during the plane crash.

Yesterday, Mr. Uzodinma set up another farcical trip to Jalingo, went into a meeting with Mr. Suntai and came out with yet another medical verdict that Suntai was “relatively healthy”.

A few minutes later, Uzodinma superintended over a power-sharing deal that effectively confers power to the Acting governor, Umar Garba and also retained some power for the cabal representing Mr. Suntai. As seen from these pictures Suntai had to be represented by his wife, Hauwa, at an enlarged stakeholders meeting after having a short meet and photo op with Uzodinma and his crew.

From all these is a final realization that Mr. Suntai was never fit to run Taraba regardless of the various stage-managed shows and spin by his supporters.
